'Green' is in! You hear about recycling and saving mother earth every day. Today's generation probably think they invented recycling and green living. Back in the day, everyone was "organic" foods that we simply do not know.
Given the economic difficulties of today, everyone is looking for a way to save money on food. It seems to me that we need only take a small step back in time to the kitchen of our childhood. We can save much money by not wasting it easy. Evenuse before the Great Depression, knew how every little bit of country cooks food that came into her kitchen table. The next time you collect your kitchen waste, think about how much you are wasting. In the early 1900's housewives were told the only elements that should find its way into a trash can were:
Eggshells – after they used a clear coffee
Potato skins – after they cooked on the potato markets
Banana Skins – if it does not clean tan shoes
Bones –after she cooked in a soup pot
Coffee grounds – if there is no garden, where they can be used as fertilizer
Tea leaves – if they do not need to lighten up into rugs, be swept if
Asparagus ends – after she cooked for the soup
Dead leaves and dirty ends of the roots of green leafy vegetables
This is not a very long list, but it is probably still relevant today, if you are recycling. Take the cans, cans, plastic bottles, and you probably have not so muchtrue 'rubbish'. But how much of this wasted food? Buying in bulk, or because something is on offer does not save money if it ends up in the garbage. Here are some modern ways to save these radicals:
1) Milk & Juice shortly before the end – this is transferred to Freeze Ice Cube trays and then store in a freezer bag for use in a recipe, drinks and smoothies too.
2) chicken broth – I love to cook, using chicken in salads and stews. I always save the leftover broth andfrozen. It makes a good start for your next pot of soup.
3) Beef Lard – The next time you roast meat, freeze some of the lard for a future stew.
4) Fried Chicken – Save the bones! After all the chicken you want to cook whole chicken the rest away in a soup pot. Strain the bones and you have to freeze chicken stock for your next recipe.
5) Mashed Potatoes – Freeze leftover mashed potatoes in muffin tins and thenin a freezer bag. When you are ready to use, just thaw out a little milk and heat again.
6) bread – you can freeze it before it goes stale and the use of a slice or two as needed. Once it is stale, you can still use it for French toast, meat loaf or bread crumbs. Leftover cookies and muffins can be frozen and are used for a quick breakfast in the week.
Do not throw 7) Coffee – Don, what was left in the pot down the drain! Turn on the warmer so, do not get too much ofBrewing. Later in the fridge for a iced coffee remains on or re-heat it the next day.
It seems that we always end up with a bite or two of something left over that by the end down the garbage disposal. Save these beans, vegetables, rice, meat and chicken scraps for a soup or stew. Even if you do not make soup from scratch, it is a quick way to dress up canned soup is homemade so it seems.
The art of using leftovers is an important factor in the prevention of waste. Theeconomical, it has always known it. The careless always ignored. Which type are you?
